The ninth-ranked State Fair Community College (SFCC) Lady Roadrunners women's basketball team finished the regular season with a 101-54 victory over Moberly Area Community College on Wednesday, Feb. 25 inside the Fred E. Davis Multipurpose Center. The Lady Roadrunners will be the number one seed in the upcoming Region 16 Tournament.
SFCC (27-1, 11-1 in Region 16) led the game 28-13 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Roadrunners led 56-24 halftime. SFCC only gave up eight points in the third quarter defensively to put the game away.
"Our defense was really active and aggressive," said Lady Roadrunners head coach Nicole Collier. "We were able to get some steals and deflections that led to transition buckets. We like to play fast. We wanted to win this game by defending and by rebounding. We did both of those things tonight. We did a really good job of sharing the ball."
Freshman guard Chloe Reed of Wentzville, Missouri led a balanced scoring attack with 20 points. Reed also tied for the team lead in assists with seven along with freshman guard Kamaree Pollard of Mt. Vernon, Ill. Sophomore guard Zoe Newland of St. Louis, Mo. pitched in with 17 points. Sophomore guard Sophia Edwin of Killeen, Texas had 12 points. Sophomore guard/forward Carolyn Foster of O'Fallon, Ill. added 11 points. Sophomore forward Ellie Buscher of St. Louis, Mo. scored 10 points, led the team in steals with five, and blocked shots with four. Buscher also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds. Freshman forward Taylor Wilson of Copperas Cove, Texas also scored 10 points.
I'm extremely proud of this group," said Collier. "They've made my job really easy. They understand basketball. You don't have to tell them things over and over. They are a great group to be around. It has been an impressive season but, our work is not done yet."
The victory was the 95th for coach Collier at SFCC.
The Lady Roadrunners will return to action at home on March 10 against an opponent to be determined in the Region 16 Tournament. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
"Our fan base has been really good," said Collier. "The opportunity to play for a chance to go to the National Tournament at home in front of our crowd means a lot."
