Roadrunners rally to win on opening day
Sedalia, Mo.-The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Roadrunners baseball team picked up an 8-7 win in 10 innings against Kansas City Kansas Community College on Monday, Feb. 9 at Liberty Park Stadium-Dey Field in Sedalia.
Sedalia, Mo.-The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Roadrunners baseball team picked up an 8-7 win in 10 innings against Kansas City Kansas Community College on Monday, Feb. 9 at Liberty Park Stadium-Dey Field in Sedalia.
Kansas City Kansas opened the scoring with three runs in the top the first inning. SFCC (1-0) responded with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Kansas City Kansas tacked on two more runs in the top of the second inning to take a 5-2 lead.
Outfielder Collin Ross of Branson, Mo. hit a two-run home run. The Roadrunners were not done, corner infielder Andrew Hill of Columbia, Mo., hit a solo home run to tie the contest. SFCC tacked on another run to take the lead 6-5 courtesy of a base hit from utility player Malachi Antle of Licking, Mo. to finish the seventh inning.
"I think we got aggressive with the bats," said head coach Jud Kindle. "That inning starts the at-bat from Dayton Doll with a base hit. It helped to get the momentum going back on our side. Ross hit the big home run. I think we changed our approach at the plate. We were really timid early in the game."
Kansas City Kansas led 7-6 after they tacked on two runs in the top of the ninth inning.
The Roadrunners tied the game at seven in the bottom the ninth.
SFCC held Kansas City Kansas off the scoreboard in the top of the 10th inning to set up the heroics in the bottom of the inning.
SFCC catcher Jose Arquez of Columbia who entered the game late in the contest launched a walk-off home run in the 10th inning to seal the victory.
Hill had a pair of hits, to go along with two runs scored and an RBI to lead the offense for SFCC. Outfielder Devin Wassmann of Platte City, Mo., also recorded a pair of hits including a double and an RBI. Infielder Connor Rice of Sedalia, Mo. added a pair of hits and an RBI. Doll scored a pair of runs. As a team, SFCC put together 11 hits.
Jacob Tellman of Jefferson City, Mo. got the start on the mound for SFCC. He pitched two innings, gave up five runs four earned on five hits, struck out three and walked one. Carter Hollingsworth of St Peters, Mo. (1-0) picked up the victory in relief. He pitched one inning and gave up one hit.
SFCC will return to action on Friday, Feb. 13 in Dallas, Texas with a doubleheader against Dallas College Brookhaven. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
