West played for Head Coach Bill Barton from 1977-1979 and was named to the All-Region 16 team both years. He also was named Region 16 Player of the Year his sophomore year.
The Filbert Five Award recognizes individuals who have exhibited outstanding talent or have made a significant contribution to the sport of basketball at the high school, collegiate, amateur, or professional levels. The award is named in honor of the late Gary Filbert, a former basketball coach, Missouri Sports Hall of Fame inductee and a Missouri Sports Legend.
West came to SFCC as an all-state basketball player from Skyline-Urbana High School. As a Roadrunner, he averaged 21 points and 12 rebounds per game and shot 55 percent from the field and 80 percent from the foul line.
After graduating from SFCC with an Associate of Arts degree, West went on to play basketball at the University of Nebraska, where he received honorable mention on the All-Big 8 team for the 1979-1980 season. At Nebraska, West played in 24 games and started in 20. He averaged 11.5 points and 4.1 rebounds per game and shot 53 percent from the field and 80 percent from the foul line.
West was inducted into SFCC's Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009.
