The State Fair Community College (SFCC) Roadrunners baseball team dedicated a brand-new baseball field before the Sophomore Day doubleheader against Mineral Area College, on Friday, April 24 in Sedalia. SFCC fell in the opening game 7-4 before falling in game two 7-2.
Charlie Marshall Field was dedicated in a pregame ceremony to Charlie Marshall. Marshall was recognized for being a beloved philanthropist and supporter of the community. He was involved in State Fair Community College, Bothwell Regional Health Center Foundation, CASA, Boys and Girls Club, the Ronald McDonald House, and was a generous supporter of local schools. Marshall passed away on March 4, 2025.
"Charlie never told me no," said SFCC Athletic Director Darren Pannier. "He was a tremendous supporter of our athletic department as well as many other projects and organizations within the community. Charlie was a pillar in our community; his tremendous legacy will be measured by the large amount of people that he helped in many ways throughout our community. We appreciate the continued support of the entire Marshall family for SFCC Athletics."
"Charlie Marshall and his whole family have been such huge supporters for State Fair Community College throughout many years," said State Fair Community College President Dr. Brent Bates. "They are also very important to our community. We are really honored to name the field after Charlie Marshall and to have his family here to celebrate the event with the first pitch. This field is going to be a spectacular asset for our community. The community will benefit for years to come."
During the dedication ceremony, Mammoth Sports Construction was thanked for helping bring the project to life. The members of the State Fair Community College Board of Trustees who were in attendance were also recognized. Charlie Marshall's grandsons Carter Rice and Connor Rice who are also current members of the SFCC baseball team threw and caught the ceremonial first pitch during the event.
"The dedication and completion of this facility is 10 years in the making," said Roadrunners Baseball head coach Jud Kindle. "Having a facility like this on campus is a step in right direction for not only our department, but the community as a whole. It means a lot to have our own field. This is the nicest field in Region 16. I can't thank the Marshall family enough for their generous donation."
In the opening game of the doubleheader, SFCC put together 10 hits. Infielder Connor Rice of Sedalia, Mo. had three hits in the game, including a double, three RBIs, and a run scored. Pitcher Jake Riggin of Lee's Summit, Mo. got the start on the mound for SFCC. Riggin pitched four innings, gave up four runs, (three earned runs) on four hits, struck out two, and walked five.
The Roadrunners sophomores were honored between games.
"We have a great group of young men in our sophomore class," said Kindle. "I have thoroughly enjoyed the people they are both on and off the field. They are good in the classroom and good in our community. They are great kids with great work ethics. They have been a joy to coach over two years."
In game two, SFCC put together five hits. Wassmann hit a home run and drove in a run. Outfielder Collin Ross of Branson, Mo. also drove in a run. Corner infielder Andrew Hill of Columbia, Mo. recorded a hit and scored a run. Infielder, Connor Rice of Sedalia, Mo. recorded a hit along with middle infielder Ty Hall of Greene City, Mo., and outfielder Drake Odneal of Smithville, Mo.
Pitcher Jacob Tellman of Jefferson City, Mo. got the start on the mound for SFCC. Tellman pitched six innings, gave up three runs, (two earned runs) on six hits, struck out seven, and walked one.
"Mineral Area is a really good team," said Kindle. "They pitched two dominant starting pitchers against us today. We didn't get timely hits. We didn't get people on base early in the game and we didn't have a very good day defensively."
