The State Fair Community College Spirit Squad, Roadettes dance team and Rowdie the Roadrunner mascot have been preparing for the 2017-2018 season by attending camps to hone their skills.
The dance team attended a Universal Dance Association (UDA) dance camp in Warrensburg July 21-23. The Roadettes came home with a superior team trophy for earning all individual blue ribbons. They also received a game day superior trophy for a team routine.
"I thought we did very well," said Roadettes Head Coach Taylor Johnson. "Camp is a great place for us to blend all of our different dance styles, and it's an excellent team-bonding experience. We had three team members who had never attended a UDA camp before; they were a little nervous, but they all received blue ribbons."
Jacob Carver, who will serve as Rowdie this year, had the opportunity to work with other college mascots at mascot camp also held in Warrensburg.
"After we got acquainted with each other, we participated in some improv games," said Carver. "We then worked on our follies, which are a mix between an acting skit and a dance."
Carver received two blue ribbons and one red ribbon and was the only freshman at the camp.
The Spirit Squad attended a National Cheerleaders Association camp at Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville July 30-Aug. 1. SFCC brought home three superior blue ribbons for game day and rally routines evaluations. They also earned a third-place trophy for their rally routine final and a bronze bid to the collegiate national competition.
"The squad did very well," said Spirit Squad Head Coach Dana Page. "They learned four or five cheers and a couple of dances. It was a good experience for the team to go and work together. It also was an opportunity to build team chemistry, and they are ready to entertain crowds."
